The Invisible Profession

Hi gorgeous Ladies, how is your week beginning?

Mine has begun as it usually does.....My "wonderful children" decided to help themselves to hundreds and thousands from my cooking cupboard before I woke up this morning, the look on Imogen's face was priceless when i walked in her room and found her vacuuming up millions of green and white specs with the Dyson Dustbuster (and it wasn't picking up). She was horrified when i told her their play date may be cancelled (i had a secret winning giggle, there is nothing like power!) She and Samuel went on to "try" to make their beds and tidy their rooms. i knew we would be going to the play date all along but there is nothing like a little fear factor heh?

Anyway next job........ find a way to lock that cupboard!

As you may or may not already know I am a mum of two. A beautiful six year old girl and a just gorgeous 3 year old boy (sometimes ha ha) I have two important professions, I am a business owner and I am a "mum".

How often do you get asked by other people that you know well or that you don't know at all "Do you work?"  and let me guess your answer, if you are a mum you say "no".

Why?

I work (at my salon) two days a week, and its funny that the impression people have is that I do nothing else for the rest of the week.
Cooking, cleaning, washing, shopping, school stuff, ironing (need i go on) don't seem to fit in that equation.Oh and that doesn't include just being there for my babies, and then there is the out of salon work that has to be done such as orders, paying wages, meetings etc, I am tired just listing them. I do actually feel that all of these things are equally important, and I respect the choices that everyone makes in relation to this.

So why do we, as mums feel that our job as mothers is not worthy of a title. Motherhood can easily be as stressful as any daytime job, and the thing is when your a mum you don't get to finish at 5pm and go home for a rest ha ha (yeah right).  Motherhood is the most important job in the world, and we as mothers need to feel proud of that, because at the end of the day we are shaping the lives of the future generation, by making important decisions on everyday situations that affect our kids.
Next time someone asks you this question "Do you work?" (yes i know its like Groundhog Day), think about your answer and say "yes",

Maggie Dent is a parenting specialist and author, she has a fabulous website full of interesting articles and important information on all the serious subjects to to with children. Imogen's school often sends home articles of hers and I always read them with great interest, I would  your feedback on the ones I share with you all.
